International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
Coaching is an awareness and development process in which an experienced professional called coach helps a coachee -who comes to the sessions with a topic and a goal related to that topic- to achieve her/his goal by the end of session or learn/remember something which was not available before the session. The professional coach uses her skills, tools and experience to provide a trusted space for the coachee to dive deeper in him/herself to pull relevant answers.
Coaching is not teaching or training.
Trainers and teachers are the experts helping people learn the information they hold whereas in coaching practice, coachee holds the information and answers.
Coaching is not a therapy.
Therapy focuses on the current problem and its roots to the past. They diagnose and treat based on their knowledge and expertise. Whereas in coaching, we focus on present moment and in any form, coaching is never a treatment or therapy.
Coaching is not consultation.
Consultants are experts that client asks questions or brings up a topic and consultant provides insights and may be way of application. Whereas in coaching, coach does not share insight or does not show the way.
Coaching is not mentoring.
Mentors guide mentees usually for an area that they have personal experience and knowledge. They share insights for mentees to learn and improve themselves. Mentorship focuses on the future whereas coaching focuses in present.
